Application requirements

The Washington Council of the Blind plans to award again in 2015 scholarships to blind college or vocational/technical school students who are residents of Washington State. In 2014 we awarded seven scholarships ranging in amount from $1,500 to $3,500.

To be considered for a scholarship, applicants must satisfy all of the following eligibility requirements:

  1. The applicant must be legally blind in both eyes. Legal blindness is defined as an individual who has a visual acuity of 20/200 or less in the corrected eye and/or 20 degrees or less visual field in the corrected eye.

  2. The applicant must be enrolled or have been accepted to enroll in an accredited vocational school, college or university located in the United States.

  3. The applicant must be a resident of Washington State. A resident of Washington State is an individual who has physically resided in the State of Washington for a period of twelve (12) consecutive months at the time of application.

First consideration will be given to those applicants who have not previously received a WCB scholarship. However, all legally blind Washington state residents admitted to academic and vocational training programs for the 2015-2016 academic year are encouraged to apply. Before receiving a scholarship, recipients must provide proof of registration for the Fall quarter or semester.

Applicants must complete an online application form, which is accessible by selecting the Scholarship Application link on this page. All applications must be received by 11:59 p.m., August 15, 2015. All application fields must be completed and supporting documents must be submitted in order for an application to be considered. If not applicable, insert "NA" in each field that does not apply to you. Applicants are responsible for submitting complete application packets online. When submitting supporting documents by e-mail, please indicate on the subject line what supporting document you are sending e.g. John Jones, personal essay. If you need technical assistance, please contact Tim McCorcle at the telephone number or e-mail address listed below.

Each application will be considered by a committee comprised of members of the Washington Council of the Blind. Scholarship committee members will conduct recorded telephone interviews with candidates during August and September 2015. All applicants will be advised of the results by September 30, 2015.

Scholarships will be presented on Saturday, November 7, 2015 at the annual WCB Convention in SeaTac, Washington. Recipients will be our guests at the scholarship reception and Banquet in order to be recognized and to meet WCB members from around the state. Recipients must attend the banquet to receive their awards.
